03Anatomy of a board
Inside 18mm birch ply.
01 / Face veneers
Graded faces.
Rotary cut birch, graded B on the show face and BB on the back. The grade tells you how many patches and pin knots to expect before you open the pack.
02 / Cross banding
Thirteen plies, crossed.
Each ply runs at right angles to the next, so the sheet stays flat and holds its strength in both directions. It is why birch takes a screw in the edge.
03 / Bond
Class 3 glue lines.
A phenolic bond to EN 314 Class 3 holds the plies together wet or dry. Look for it whenever the job sees weather, steam or a hosepipe.
04 / Tolerance
Sanded to size.
Calibrated to within a few tenths of a millimetre, so housings fit, joints line up and the router stays set from the first sheet to the last.
